Preventing Pest Problems in Offices

Pests in and around offices can cause great distress for all concerned employees. Especially in the subtropics and tropic climates of India, pests like mosquitoes pose an additional health risk, by transmitting potentially fatal diseases such as Dengue, Malaria and Chikungunya.

Pests, especially rodents like rats and mice, can cause substantial damages to electronic fittings and stock with computer equipment and cables being particularly at risk from the gnawing of rodents. While it is difficult to make generalizations on pests in offices, the following pests are among the most common in an office environment:

  • Rodents: Rats and Mice are often considered a major pest problem in offices, because apart from their gnawing on and damaging of electric fittings, they cause contamination, with for instance a single rat leaving more than 25,000 droppings within a year. It is lesser known that rodents are also the cause of Leptospirosis and Rat bite fever.

  • Cockroaches: The main pest cockroach species encountered in India are the German cockroach and the American cockroach. Cockroaches in offices cause trouble through contamination and they are a source of powerful allergens, causing asthma, eczema and allergies. Adverse effects of cockroach infestations in the office are enhanced by the fact that employees spend a lot of time exposed to these pests. German Cockroaches are for instance often found congregating inside coffee machines.

  • Mosquitoes: Mosquitoes often plague offices and everybody working in them. Especially during epidemics of mosquito-borne diseases, measures should be taken to protect employees from mosquitoes inside the office.
