Appearance

 

Indian Palm Squirrel (Funambulus palmarum)
  • About the size of rats, with bushy tails slightly shorter than the body
  • Grey brown colour, with five white stripes on the back, three of which extend from the head to the tail. The belly is creamy white and the tail is covered with interspersed black and white hair
  • Small and triangular shaped ears

Lifecycle

  • Females have litters of 2-3.
  • The young are weaned after about 10 weeks and become sexually mature at 9 months

Habits

  • Breeding takes place in nests build of grass
  • Omnivorous, eating insects, small birds and crops
  • Often comes into houses in the search for food.
