Appearance

House Gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus)
  • Body covered with scales or horny plates
  • Spines in bands around the tail
  • About 5 Inches long
  • Bulging lidless eyes and toe pads enabling it to walk on smooth surfaces, such as glass
  • Make a very distinctive sound, which sounds like "Chuck-chuck-chuck"

Lifecycle

  • The female house gecko commonly lays 2 hard shelled non-adhesive eggs and hides them in cracks and crevices
  • House geckos, like all other reptiles, shed their skin, allowing the reptile to grow, disposing of parasites, dirt and deposits on the skin.

Habits

  • Common around the outside and inside walls of buildings. Often seen near lights, where they prey for flying insects, such as moths
  • House geckos feed on insects and if in low numbers can be considered useful
  • Can lose their tail if disturbed in order to distract potential predators
